Khon Dance-Drama Paper Mache Mask
This Hanuman style khon mask was used during the classical dance- drama in Tailand for special occassions. Dances took place at events such as weddings, births, and funerals. Made from paper mache and has 15-20 layers of paper called "Khoi" which is made from tree bark. This is the same paper that the Buddhas teaching manuscripts were written on. It was an honor to wear these masks due to the rarity of performances and due to the fact that dancers were trained for 10 years before being able to perform. Gems line the crown all the way around. The back has a colorful handpainted design.
